Iron Gym Speed Abs Ab Roller

With the arrival of summer, it was time to do more exercise to get fitter and tone up the muscles of the body. One of the exercise tools I had wanted to get was an ab roller. As I usually do, I looked on line and did my analysis of the various ones available. This led me to settle on getting the Iron Gym Speed Abs abdominal trainer as the best available option.I bought this from the TKMAXX store in Oxford at a reduced price of £16, which is always a great start. It is very easy to assemble, and can be detached just as easily to prevent clutter. The special feature of this ab roller is the fact that the wheel is fairly large, and is spring loaded to ensure a more even movement away from and assistance in recovering back to the original position, unlike most other ab rollers.

It comes as three simple parts which are easily assembled and dismantled, two handles and the wheel.

The handles will only fit into the wheel on its designated side, and hence it is not possible to assemble it the wrong way. It then needs to be held with the arrow on the wheel pointing forward, as this will ensure that the spring is loaded in the right way when you push it away from you, and will uncoil and assist the return motion when moving the wheel back to the starting point.

The box illustrates how to use the Speed Abs abdominal trainer. It is recommended initially to start by doing 10 reps, resting one minute and then repeating the reps, and to do as many cycles as you can. Some however are able to do 30 or more consecutive reps at a time, which shows how strong their core muscles must be.

What I like about it?

  1. Easy to use and very effective. It does work to strengthen the core muscles. It will work the pectoral muscles, triceps and the abs pretty hard.
  2. It is small and compact, not taking up much space.
  3. Reasonably priced, particularly bearing in mind the size of the wheel and that it is spring-loaded to aid the exercise.

What could be improved?

  1. Doing this exercise will put strain on the knees as it supports the body’s weight. Hence it is a good idea to have some form of cushioning support for the knees (not included with the Speed Abs). I simply bought one of the knee pads used for working in the garden to support my knees while exercising. Problem solved.

Even after just 2 weeks of use, I have already noticed a significant improvement in my core muscle strength and can already notice some definition developing in the pectorals and upper abs. But the most noticeable is the development in the triceps region, which actually amazed my wife.

I really like the Speed Abs, and have noticed that with persistent use over the last 6 weeks, that I am able to push myself that bit more and get even closer to the ground with each rep. Great exercise tool. Even my family are using it too, which is great as we push each other to do that little bit more. This is a great start to healthy living with a good exercise routine.
